SDF attack results in death of two Syrian soldiers near Aleppo
The Syrian Defense Ministry condemned the assault as a “blatant violation” of prior agreements between the government and the SDF. “The SDF continues to reject all previous understandings and agreements, disregarding them by targeting army positions and killing its personnel,” the ministry said.
This incident follows a previous SDF attack in the same area on Oct. 9, which resulted in the death of one soldier and injuries to others. It comes just three days after Defense Minister Murhaf Abu Qasra and SDF Commander Mazloum Abdi agreed to an immediate ceasefire in northern and northeastern Syria following clashes in Aleppo’s Al-Ashrafiyah and Sheikh Maqsoud neighborhoods.
The SDF, largely composed of the YPG, the Syrian branch of the PKK, has repeatedly violated agreements despite a March 10 announcement by the Syrian presidency to integrate the group into state institutions while preserving the country’s territorial integrity.
