UN Raises Alarm Over Civilian Risks in Southern Syria Amid Israeli Military Expansion

(MENAFN) The United Nations human rights office has warned of increasing danger to civilians in southern Syria, citing expanding military activity by Israeli forces in the region.

According to reports, a UN spokesperson told journalists in Geneva that there are growing protection concerns for civilians in areas where Israeli operations are reportedly intensifying. He stated that these developments are putting civilian lives at risk in the affected area.

He also noted that several fundamental rights, including family life and privacy, are being restricted. In addition, livelihoods—particularly in agricultural communities—have been significantly disrupted.

The spokesperson referenced accounts of harassment and intimidation, along with detentions, interrogations, home searches, and limitations on movement. These reports include activity in the Quneitra governorate, where Israeli forces are said to have established checkpoints, carried out house searches, and detained residents.

Citing Syrian authorities, he said at least 250 people, including minors, have been detained in southern Syria since the collapse of the former government. Of those, around 50 remain in custody, with some allegedly transferred to detention facilities in the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights.

Concerns were also raised regarding reported Israeli plans to expand settlement activity in the occupied Syrian Golan, including proposals to relocate approximately 3,000 Israeli families there. The UN representative said such actions would violate international humanitarian law.

The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, was also cited as calling on Israel to halt alleged violations of international humanitarian and human rights law in Syria, adding that settlement expansion in the occupied territory must cease.
