Provided by AGPThe Interior Ministry said security forces, working alongside the Counterterrorism Directorate, detained Major General Wajih Ali al-Abdullah in what it described as a rapid security operation.
Al-Abdullah reportedly served for 13 years as director of military affairs at the presidential palace during Assad’s presidency. Officials described him as part of the former leadership’s inner circle and accused him of participating in coordination of repressive actions and serious violations against civilians during his tenure.
Authorities stated that his service period from 2005 to 2018 coincided with what they described as one of the most violent phases in the country’s recent history.
The arrest is part of a broader campaign targeting former military and security officials accused of involvement in alleged abuses committed during the conflict that followed the Syrian uprising.
In related developments, other former officials have also been detained in recent days, including individuals accused of involvement in major incidents during the war, such as chemical attacks and large-scale killings in Damascus suburbs.
The political context has shifted significantly since former President Bashar al-Assad left the country in late 2024, ending decades of Baath Party rule. A transitional administration led by President Ahmad al-Sharaa was formed in early 2025, under which new accountability and security measures have been initiated.
