Syrian delegation to take part in US-mediated talks with Israel

(MENAFN) A Syrian government delegation has joined a new round of negotiations with Israel under U.S. mediation, Syrian media reported Monday.

According to the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA), the delegation is led by Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani and intelligence chief Hussein al-Salama. A government source stated: “The resumption of talks reaffirms Syria’s firm commitment to restoring its non-negotiable national rights.”

The source added that discussions are focused on reactivating the 1974 Disengagement Agreement to ensure “the withdrawal of Israeli forces to the lines in place prior to Dec. 8, 2024.”

He emphasized that the agreement would operate within a reciprocal security framework prioritizing full Syrian sovereignty and protection from any external interference in Syria’s internal affairs.

An Israeli government spokeswoman, Shosh Bedrosian, said Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is seeking peaceful borders with Syria but declined to provide details about possible withdrawals from areas seized in the buffer zone. She also noted that Netanyahu has highlighted the importance of safeguarding Syria’s Druze community as well as other religious minorities, including Christians.

No immediate comment was issued by U.S. officials regarding the talks.

Reports said that senior Israeli and Syrian officials met in Paris on Monday, with U.S. mediation, marking the fifth round of negotiations and the first in roughly two months. According to a source cited by Axios, the Trump administration is pressing both sides to reach a deal aimed at stabilizing the border and potentially paving the way for future diplomatic normalization.

The new talks take place against a backdrop of repeated Israeli incursions into Syrian territory following the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s regime in late 2024, which Damascus has strongly condemned.
