UN Warns Israeli Military Actions in Syria Threaten Political Stability

(MENAFN) The United Nations has criticized Israel over a renewed entry into Syrian territory, cautioning that repeated military actions risk undermining Syria’s already delicate political transition and urging an immediate end to such operations.

During a UN Security Council session focused on Syria, the UN deputy special envoy for Syria Claudio Cordone stated that “Israeli military activity in southern Syria continues in breach of existing agreements and international law.” He referred to ongoing Israeli operations that include frequent crossings into Syrian territory, the establishment of checkpoints, and the detention of Syrian citizens.

He also pointed to an incident on Wednesday in which “dozens of Israelis crossed several hundred meters into the Area of Separation near the village of Hadar,” describing both the entry and conduct of those involved as “highly provocative.”

Cordone stressed the need to halt these actions, saying, “I reiterate our strong call on Israel to cease violations, respect Syria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, adhere to the 1974 Disengagement of Forces Agreement and prevent incidents such as the one today,” while also calling for the release of Syrians detained in connection with these incidents, which he said violate international law.

He further expressed cautious optimism that “talks between Israel and Syria with US facilitation can lead to sustainable security arrangements.”
