UN Raises Alarm Over Civilian Safety in Southern Syria

(MENAFN) The United Nations has expressed growing concern about the safety of civilians in southern Syria, warning that expanding Israeli military operations in the area are increasing risks to local populations, according to statements delivered in Geneva.

A spokesperson for the UN human rights office said that reports point to escalating threats affecting civilians, particularly in regions where Israeli forces are operating. He noted that these developments are impacting daily life, including restrictions on family life and privacy, as well as causing serious disruptions to livelihoods—especially in farming communities.

The spokesperson also referenced accounts of harassment, intimidation, arrests, interrogations, and home searches, along with limitations on movement. These incidents have reportedly been observed in areas such as Quneitra, where checkpoints have been established and civilians detained.

Citing information from Syrian authorities, he said that at least 250 individuals, including minors, have been detained in southern Syria since the collapse of the previous government. Of those, around 50 remain in custody, with some allegedly transferred to detention facilities in the Israeli-controlled Syrian Golan.

Concerns were also raised about reported Israeli plans to expand settlements in the occupied Golan region, including proposals to relocate thousands of Israeli families there. The UN warned that such actions would be inconsistent with international humanitarian law.

According to the spokesperson, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk called on Israel "to bring an end to all violations of international humanitarian law and international human rights law in Syria," adding that settlement expansion “must also stop.”
