Damascus Airport Shut, Flights Rerouted to Aleppo
The General Authority of Civil Aviation and Air Transport cited active risk monitoring as the driving force behind the decision, stating: "The extension came in light of the continued monitoring and assessment of regional developments by the committee responsible for risk management, to ensure the highest levels of aviation safety and security in accordance with approved international standards."
The authority confirmed that operations at Damascus International Airport would remain halted until 11:00 PM local time — 2000 GMT — on Monday.
Syrian Airlines, the country's national carrier, had already begun rerouting affected flights to Aleppo airport in northern Syria. The airline, citing passenger safety amid the deteriorating security situation, confirmed the operational adjustments as reported by Syria's Al-Ikhbariyya TV. Specifically, the Damascus-Dubai route was redirected to operate as Aleppo-Dubai, while the Jeddah-Damascus service was rescheduled to depart from and arrive at Aleppo — both adjustments applying to flights scheduled for June 8.
The aviation disruptions follow a sharp surge in regional tensions. On Sunday, Israel struck Beirut despite an active ceasefire, prompting Iran to launch retaliatory missiles at northern Israel. Israel subsequently responded with multiple waves of airstrikes against Iran.
The broader crisis dates to late February, when coordinated US-Israeli airstrikes on Iran set off a chain of Iranian retaliatory strikes across Israel and neighboring countries hosting American military assets. A ceasefire reached on April 8 provided only temporary relief before unraveling over disputes surrounding its implementation and further regional deterioration.
