Syria Reopens Southern Airspace, Restores Damascus Airport Operations

(MENAFN) Syria has reopened its southern air corridors and resumed flight operations at Damascus International Airport after a temporary suspension triggered by regional military escalations.

According to reports, the country’s civil aviation authority announced on Monday that air traffic in the southern region had restarted, alongside the full return of operations at the capital’s main airport.

Omar Al-Husari, head of the Syrian General Authority of Civil Aviation and Air Transport, said in statements that services resumed at 16:00 local time.

“We announce the reopening of the southern airspace corridors of the Syrian Arab Republic and the resumption of air traffic and operational activities at Damascus International Airport as of 16:00 today,” he said.

He added that the decision followed continuous monitoring of the situation and a detailed risk assessment conducted by a specialist committee in coordination with relevant authorities, ensuring that safety standards align with international aviation requirements.

“The decision to reopen the airspace came following continuous monitoring of the situation and a comprehensive risk assessment by the competent committee, in coordination with the relevant authorities, ensuring the maintenance of the highest levels of safety and security in Syrian airspace in accordance with adopted international standards,” he added.

The reopening comes after Syrian authorities had temporarily closed southern air routes and suspended airport operations on Sunday evening amid heightened tensions following Iranian missile launches toward Israel, which followed Israeli strikes on Beirut.
